The Wonyachi Elect , Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, has urged the Office of the President to translate President Yoweri Museveni’s messages into various local languages to better serve rural communities.
Dr. Okune emphasized that while the President has consistently delivered important and transformative messages, the rural population often struggles to comprehend them due to language barriers.

This was during a meeting with Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) on Friday, ahead of his upcoming coronation in November, Dr. Okune highlighted the need for enhanced communication to ensure that critical government messages reach and impact all citizens, especially those in remote areas. He pointed out that due to high poverty levels in the region, many locals are vulnerable to manipulation by opportunists.
The Wonyaci-elect’s call comes at a time when the government is rolling out several initiatives aimed at transitioning people into a money economy. Dr. Okune stressed that a better understanding of the President’s messages could significantly aid these efforts and empower citizens.
The meeting, held at the Lango Cultural Centre, was attended by RDCs and Resident City Commissioners (RCCs), who expressed their support for Dr. Okune’s leadership and the broader goals of the Lango Cultural Institution.
RDC Gillian Akullu, representing the whip of Lango RDCs and RCCs, thanked Dr. Okune for organizing the event and underscored the importance of collaboration between cultural institutions and the central government.
The deputy Dean of RDCs, Mr. Oguti Sebastian Oswin urged cultural leaders to work closely with government bodies to address pressing issues such as HIV prevalence in Northern Uganda. He also emphasized the need for cultural leaders to remain impartial in resolving disputes among their people.

As the Lango tribe, one of Uganda’s largest communities with a population of approximately 2.3 million, prepares for the official coronation of their paramount chief on November 2nd, 2024, Dr. Okune invited the RDCs and RCCs to participate in the ceremony. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the government to promote economic growth and address the challenges faced by the youth in the region.
President Museveni is expected to meet with cultural leaders across Uganda in September 2024 to discuss issues related to poverty reduction, further reinforcing the importance of translating government messages into languages accessible to all citizens.
