Alebtong District Assistant RDC Jimmy Okello has issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in illegal activities within wetlands.
Okello emphasized that those cultivating rice, maize, and sugarcane in wetlands are in direct violation of presidential directives aimed at protecting the environment. He urged farmers to cease unlawful farming practices, which he noted are contributing to climate changes, such as reduced rainfall, impacting the agricultural seasons.
He pointed out that the misuse of wetlands is not only an environmental concern but also a community issue, as the ecological balance is being disturbed, leading to adverse effects on weather patterns.
Okello advised those holding licenses to operate in wetlands to consider transitioning to more environmentally friendly activities, such as fish farming, which he described as a more profitable and sustainable option.
In addition to addressing environmental concerns, Okello sent a strong message to head teachers in government schools, warning them against extorting money from parents.
He reminded them that the government is supporting schools through the Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) programs, which provide resources to eliminate the need for extra fees. He emphasized that any exploitation of parents would not be tolerated.
Commissioner Okello also expressed his gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for appointing him as the Assistant RDC. He emphasized that he will use the opportunity to actively mobilize support for government programs.
