Momo Pay enables merchants to perform multiple transactions, such as selling airtime with commissions, paying school fees, and transferring money to bank accounts. Customers can make purchases starting from as low as 500 Ugandan shillings. The system is designed to promote ease of transactions without the burden of extra charges.
During the launch, Philip Odoi, MTN Uganda’s Regional Commercial Head for the Northern Region, described Momo Pay as the most efficient cashless payment solution available. He emphasized that there are no transaction fees when using the system, making it ideal for both urban and rural communities. “Our goal as MTN is to promote a cashless economy across Uganda, and Momo Pay allows you to transact at your convenience,” Odoi said. He also highlighted the system’s role in eliminating counterfeit money and reducing the risk of theft.
Julius Engeco, the Manager of Agent Liquidity at MTN Uganda, added that a promotional campaign tied to Momo Pay will run until December 31, 2023. Customers can win various prizes, including water bottles, caps, T-shirts, and cash-back rewards. For purchases of 20,000 shillings and above, users can receive a cash-back of 20,000 shillings.
Daniel Omodi, a resident of Boke Agali in Lira City East Division, shared his positive experience with the service. “I was excited to receive an instant cash-back of 30,000 shillings on my phone after using Momo Pay to purchase 50,000 shillings worth of fuel for my car,” he said.
MTN Uganda hopes that the Momo Pay system will contribute to a growing cashless economy, offering secure and cost-effective transaction solutions for both merchants and consumers.
