Lira City Council FC Opens Northern Regional League Season with Convincing Win

Lira City Council Football Club (LCCFC) kicked off the 2024/2025 season of the Northern Regional League, Rhino Group, in spectacular fashion, securing a commanding 3-1 victory against last season’s champions, Northern Gateway SC.

The much-anticipated derby, held at the lively Rhino Park,(Lango College Playground), drew a large crowd eager to witness the fierce rivalry for city supremacy.

The match began with LCCFC showing their intent early on. Midfielder Patrick Alany opened the scoring just 12 minutes into the game, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

However, Northern Gateway SC responded with determination, and shortly before halftime, Daniel Ojok levelled the score, leaving both teams tied at 1-1 going into the break.

The second half was marked by heightened tension, with both teams pushing for dominance. It was LCCFC’s striker Odongo Brian who broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. After a brilliant run from winger Emmanuel Okeng, who skillfully manoeuvred past Gateway defenders, Odongo found the net, making it 2-1 for the home side.

Just moments later, LCCFC extended their lead when Patrick Alany completed his brace from the penalty spot. A foul on Emmanuel Okeng within the penalty area allowed Alany to convert, sealing the match at 3-1.

This high-scoring affair stands in stark contrast to last season’s encounters, where both teams managed to win their home games by a solitary goal.

The rejuvenation of LCCFC has captured the attention of local football fans, particularly following the appointment of renowned coach Dan Ogwal Engwedo.

Known for his talent development, Ogwal’s experience is seen as a significant asset for the club. During his unveiling, he expressed a bold ambition to remain unbeaten, a feat they achieved in the previous season under coach Ronald Okello, although they fell short in the playoffs against Young Elephants Fc.

On the other hand, Northern Gateway SC, who finished first in the league last season, struggled to meet the expectations set upon them. With a new coaching duo of Anthony Odongo Gigs and assistant Isaac Ojok Alito, their performance left fans wanting more in this opening match.

Lira City Council will next travel over 80 kilometres to face Red Devo Namesale FC  in Amolatar District on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Whereas Northern Gateway SC will welcome Amati Fc from Oyam district.
