Garbage management continues to be a significant challenge in Lira City, one of Uganda’s newest urban centers, established in 2020. In August, concerned citizens petitioned the Lira City Council, expressing frustration over inadequate garbage disposal practices, flooding, and environmental neglect.

In response to these urgent concerns, the Lira City Development Forum has launched the “Keep Lira City Clean, Green, and Beautiful” campaign.
This initiative aims to address ongoing waste disposal issues and promote proper waste segregation among residents. The campaign encourages individuals to sort recyclables, organic waste, and non-recyclable items correctly to foster a cleaner environment.
Emmanuel Akeny, President of the City Development Forum, Lira City, emphasized the necessity for residents to take personal responsibility for their waste management practices.
“Many think it’s the responsibility of the mayor or town clerk alone to keep the city clean. This mindset has led to careless littering,” he stated, highlighting the importance of changing public attitudes toward waste disposal.
The Forum plans to collaborate with Lira City Council and local landlords to install more trash bins in public areas, ensuring convenient disposal options for residents. “We’re asking business owners to provide trash bins outside their shops, and we’ll work with the council to place them in all public areas,” Emmanuel added, aiming to reduce roadside litter.
Janet Akite, Sant’Egidio Community Coordinator for Lira Diocese, echoed the need for proactive public participation in garbage management, warning that poor waste disposal practices pose significant health risks.
The campaign aligns with the Lira City Council’s enforcement of regulations on waste management, traffic, and child protection.
Activities during the campaign included street litter collection, sweeping, and community sensitization. Planned to occur quarterly, future campaigns will also focus on tree planting along Lira’s main highways to enhance environmental sustainability and beautify the city.
