Lira Corporate Gala Promotes Unity and Employee Well-Being through Sports and Health Camps.

Since its inception in 2022, the Lira corporate sports event has become a vital platform for promoting unity and employee well-being. This monthly gala features a blend of sports and health camps, fostering a sense of community and encouraging healthy lifestyles among participants.

The event kicks off with public aerobics sessions aimed at promoting self-care. These sessions, led by expert instructors, set a lively tone for the day. Participants are encouraged to engage in a variety of outdoor and indoor games, including football, volleyball, chase, Mweso, and Ludo. This diverse range of activities ensures there is something for everyone, enhancing the overall enjoyment and participation levels.

James Ochola, an aerobics instructor at the Lira Corporate Gala, highlights the benefits of aerobics: “though It is hard to learn aerobics, but with music and some adjustments, it becomes enjoyable. Aerobics helps to burn fat, reduce weight, and improve both physical and mental fitness.”

In addition to sports, the gala offers a range of health services. Free male circumcision, HIV testing, sickle cell screening, blood donation, and free TB screening are available to attendees. The inclusion of these services underscores the event’s commitment to comprehensive health promotion.

Experts at the gala emphasize the importance of TB awareness, noting that at least 5 out of 10 people tested are found positive following the tests the have been doing around the city.

Steven Onyago, Senior Medical Officer at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, stresses the significance of early detection and treatment: “TB is a serious public health concern in our communities. Early detection and treatment lead to better outcomes.”

The event also serves as a platform for advocating increased funding to combat TB. Onyago points out the challenges posed by insufficient funding, which hampers efforts to screen and treat the community effectively. He urges the government to provide more support to enhance early detection and treatment initiatives.

During its sixth outing, the Lira corporate sports event attracted participation from over 30 companies, drawing in many youths with its combination of sports and entertainment. Corporate companies were advised to avoid using young and unlicensed players, ensuring fair competition and integrity in the games.

Overall, the Lira corporate sports event has proven to be a successful initiative in promoting unity, health, and well-being among employees and the broader community.
