A heated discussion is erupting social media after Kimong Eveline Kim posted a statement criticizing individuals who share videos of themselves dancing traditional Acoli dances online.
Kimong argued that those who do so are “masqueraders” who do not genuinely love Acoli culture.
However, Simpo Gladys, a prominent content creator from Northern Uganda feels attached and fired back with a passionate response.
Gladys defended her right to share her cultural heritage online, stating that she will continue to “masquerade” and celebrate her culture despite criticism from some members of the Acoli community.
Gladys emphasized the importance of adapting to the evolving world and embracing new platforms for cultural expression.
She pointed out that the same individuals who once criticized her for sharing videos on TikTok are now actively using the platform themselves.
This highlights the tension between preserving traditional cultural practices and embracing modern technology to share and celebrate one’s heritage.
As Gladys noted, “The world is evolving…if you don’t like watching us dance online, you can throw away that smartphone or just go offline.”
