Lira University inaugurated its third council on Tuesday, April 30th, following the expiry of the second council’s term in April.
The new council is chaired by David Geoffrey Opio Okello, who previously served as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda. He is joined by Florence Nelly Okullu as the deputy chairperson.
Upon taking his oath, Mr. Opio emphasized his primary goal of resource mobilization, aiming to decrease the university’s dependence on government funding. His strategic focus includes seeking alternative funding sources and fostering partnerships to strengthen the university’s financial stability.

Vice Chancellor of Lira University, Prof. Japher Ogwal Okeng, highlighted the ongoing challenge of low staffing within the university. He called on the new council to prioritize hiring independent academic registrars for each faculty to enhance operational efficiency and support academic growth.
Ninsiima Gift, the student representative on the council and the Vice Guild President views her role as an opportunity to advocate for the rights and concerns of students at the university. She aims to ensure that student voices are heard and considered in council decisions.
