On Tuesday, the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua, completed the designation of the remaining chairpersons and deputy chairpersons for the sectoral committees of Parliament. The announcement was made during a plenary sitting in the afternoon.
Key appointments include the former Ethics and Integrity Minister, Dr. Nsaba Buturo of Bufumbira East, as the chairperson of the East African Community Affairs Committee, with Shartis Kutesa Musherure of Mawogola North serving as his deputy. The Committee on Education and Sports will now be led by Kubeketerya James of Bunya West, deputized by Rwamapara Women’s Representative, Molly Asiimwe.
Agnes Kunihira Abwoli, Workers MP, has been designated as the chairperson of the Gender, Labour, and Social Development Committee, with Kanushu Laura, the PWD National Representative, as her deputy. The Health Committee, previously led by Dr. Charles Ayume, will now be chaired by Dr. Ruyonga Joseph of Hoima East.
The ICT and National Guidance Committee, formerly chaired by Moses Magogo of Budiope East, has been assigned to Ayoo Tonny of Kwania, with Isabirye Idd of Bunya South as the deputy. Stephen Baka Mugabi will chair the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, succeeding Robinah Gureme Rwakojjo of Gomba West.
Additional appointments include Herbert Edmund Ariko of Soroti City East as the chairperson of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, Alex Byarugaba Bakunda of Isingiro South for the Presidential Affairs Committee, and Gomba Woman MP Sylvia Nayebale for the Trade Tourism and Industry Committee.
These changes follow a directive from the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) last month, which called for the removal of many committee chairpersons and deputy chairpersons. This decision was driven by concerns over significant corruption within parliamentary committees, prompting the leadership to take decisive action to address and rectify the situation.
