BSG Labongo: How Survivor of LRA Abduction Turned Ugandan Music Icon, an Advocate.

Dennis Labongo, widely known by his stage name BSG Labongo, hails from Nwoya District in Northern Uganda.

Born in 1983, his early life took a tragic turn when, at the age of 9, he and his father were abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in 1992.

During a daring escape attempt, his father was shot and killed by the LRA, while Labongo was shot in the right leg, leaving him permanently disabled.

Today, he relies on crutches, and although many assume his disability was the result of an accident, the story behind it is a harrowing tale of survival. Despite the unimaginable tragedy, Labongo expresses gratitude, saying, “I thank God I am still alive.”

Labongo’s story is one of resilience and overcoming the challenges faced by thousands of children in Northern Uganda during the war.

Many of these children were abducted, killed, or permanently disabled by firearms and landmines. Labongo was one of the survivors but lost access to his medical records at Gulu Referral Hospital, which were disposed of before 1996. Despite the hardships, he used his painful experiences to fuel a greater purpose.

Growing up in the war-torn region, Labongo began channeling his history into advocacy, addressing issues such as abduction, poverty, and disability.

His message, one of hope, love, and resilience, has resonated with many. His musical career, which began in 2003, became a platform for spreading awareness, with a focus on themes such as “disability is not inability” and fighting domestic violence. His music urges communities to respect and support one another, showcasing his commitment to social change.

With a distinctive fusion of African beats, a clear voice, and soulful lyrics, Labongo’s music has become a national favorite.

Fluent in English, Luo/Acoli, and Luganda, he skillfully weaves these languages into his lyrics, making his music accessible and meaningful to a diverse audience.

His first single was released in 2006, but it was his 2008 hip-hop single, Praise the Lord, that earned him national recognition and a nomination for best hip-hop song.

Today, BSG Labongo stands as a beacon of hope, using his voice to inspire and uplift others, proving that even in the face of adversity, one can rise above and make a lasting impact.
