Organized by the Catherine Phil Sickle Support Initiative in collaboration with Lira City Elites Club, the run is aimed at raising awareness and securing essential funds to tackle sickle cell disease in Uganda.
The Run’s primary goal is to generate funding for the acquisition of an HB electrophoresis machine. This machine, crucial for the accurate diagnosis of sickle cell disease, will be donated to Lira Regional Referral Hospital and Alebtong Health Centre IV.

According to Catherine Phil Sickle Support Initiative, Sickle cell disease continues to be a pressing health challenge in Uganda. Alebtong District, in particular, reports the highest prevalence of the disease at 23.8%.
Alarmingly, around 25,000 children are born with the condition annually, with a staggering 80% succumbing to complications before their fifth birthday. These figures underscore the urgency of improved healthcare resources and broader public education to combat the disease’s impact.
Stanbic Bank Uganda’s involvement in the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run reflects its ongoing commitment to improving maternal and child health initiatives. Through this contribution, the bank is not only aiding in the critical fundraising effort but is also helping to raise awareness about the devastating effects of sickle cell disease on Ugandan families and communities.
