Members of Parliament Call on Government to Replace Karuma Bridge After Recent Fatal Accident

Following the recent incident where a trailer plunged into the River Nile after going over the barriers at the Karuma Bridge, Members of Parliament have called on the government to replace the 60-year-old bridge.

The call was made by Bardege-Layibi Division Member of Parliament, Hon. Martin Ojara Mapenduzi during a plenary sitting on Thursday, 22 June 2023. Mapenduzi emphasized that the aging bridge has become dangerous and has claimed over 25 trucks and their occupants since 2011.

In response to this plea, the Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, stated that the government recognizes the urgent need to replace the bridge and is in the process of mobilizing funds from development partners for a new bridge.

However, Wamala noted that lack of funds is currently a challenge for the ministry. In the meantime, the ministry is reinforcing speed control measures on the bridge to reduce the number of accidents.

Wamala assured the public that the ministry has put in place speed control measures such as humps, soldiers, and police traffic control units to man the bridge.
