The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) last week announced the closure of Karuma Bridge in Kiryandongo district to heavy vehicles such as buses, Lorries, and trailers starting Monday, May 6, 2024. This decision comes after a recent assessment found that some elements of the bridge structure, particularly the concrete deck on the Kampala approach lane, have deteriorated.
UNRA’s assessment revealed that the continued exposure of the bridge to increasing heavy traffic could accelerate its deterioration and compromise its serviceability if left unaddressed. As a precaution, the authority has closed the bridge to heavy traffic and has initiated a process to identify a contractor to restore the bridge structure as soon as possible.
In the meantime, only passenger vehicles carrying up to 28 passengers will be allowed to use the bridge. The restoration intervention is expected to be completed within three months.
Karuma Bridge is a critical link on the major highway connecting the northern and southern parts of Uganda. It also serves as a transit route between the coastal ports of Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, and South Sudan.
UNRA has advised motorists to use alternative routes while the restoration is underway. Travelers from Kampala heading to Gulu/West Nile should use the Luwero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) route to connect to Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo. For those going to Lira, the recommended route is through Iganga, Nakalama, Tirinyi, Pallisa, Kumi, Soroti, and Lira.
As a long-term solution, the government is expediting the process to secure funding for the construction of a new bridge at Karuma. This project aims to ensure the safety and reliability of this crucial transportation corridor.
