The political landscape in Dokolo District is ablaze as Hon. Jimmy James Micheal Akena, President of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), intensifies efforts to drum up support for party flag bearer Ms. Sarah Aguti Nyangkori.
Akena, accompanied by other party leaders, embarked on a campaign tour of Bata Town Council and Okwalongwen Sub-County on Thursday, marking the second day of intensive canvassing.
Addressing the electorate, Akena fervently urged the people of Dokolo District to throw their weight behind UPC candidate Sarah Aguti Nyangkori. He pledged unwavering party commitment, vowing to remain on the ground until every vote is cast, counted, and declared. Akena adamantly rejected any notion of vote tampering, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the unadulterated voice of Dokolo’s populace is heard.
In response, Aguti assured constituents of her dedication to improving their welfare and delivering essential services. She articulated her vision to catalyze transformative change in the lives of Dokolo’s communities and the nation at large, focusing on pivotal areas such as agriculture, markets, infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Furthermore, the UPC received a significant boost as two aspirants, with affiliations to the party, graciously withdrew their candidature in favor of Nyangkori. This move comes in the wake of the untimely passing of the late Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal, who succumbed to cancer-related illness on January 18, 2024. Ogwal’s funeral rites were conducted at Alito Town Council in Kole District on January 27, 2024.
The Electoral Commission has designated March 21, 2024, as the polling day, setting the stage as all attention remains fixed on the unfolding drama, eager to witness the democratic process in action.
Early this week, seven candidates threw their hats into the ring for the upcoming contest. Representing various political factions, they include Rosemary Austin Alwoc Ogwal from the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Janet Rose Adongo Elau from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Sarah Aguti from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), and Harriet from the National Unity Platform (NUP). Additionally, Esther Akullo Obot, Anna Grace Lalam, and Rebecca Arao are all running as independent candidates.
On Tuesday, Erikwaine Ngobi, the Dokolo District Returning officer took place at the offices of the EC in Dokolo town, officially closed the nomination process promptly at one minute past 5 p.m., in accordance with the law. Ngobi confirmed that all nominated candidates had met the necessary requirements for nomination.
