In a bid to fill the vacant position in Oyam North Constituency, National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially shown interest by unveiling their candidate for the upcoming by-election.
The party’s vice president, Dr. Lina zedriga waru and secretary general, Lewis Lubongoya officially unveiled Mr. Daniel Okello as their flag bearer for the area Member of Parliament seat under the NUP ticket.
The by-election was necessitated by the untimely death of the Former State Minister for Gender and Labour, the late Rt. Col. Charles Okello Engola Macodowgo who was shot dead by one of his bodyguards Wilson Sabiti.
After the partys electoral commission vetting among three aspirants who had shown interest, Okello emerged victorious ahead of his other two colleagues. His other two colleagues incudes, Mr. Odongo Samuel representing Nama Town Council at Mukono district and Mr. Namjo a resident of Ngai-sub-county in Oyam District.
The NUP Secretariat General believes that he is a better option to carry the party’s flag and is calling on the outstanding candidate to stand firm and be resilient to bribes.
Okello has pledged to represent his constituency without any segregation and promote democracy during the election. His campaign theme, “Love and Service for all,” emphasizes the need to fight poverty in Oyam North Constituency.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled June 19th, 2023 for the nomination exercise, with voting scheduled for July 6th, 2023.
With only 10 days to the nomination date, different political parties have already revealed their candidates for the by-election as others are rumoured to run as independent candidates.
Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) have already named their flag bearers, Dr Eunice Apio and while the NUP approved Okello Daniel, the Oyam Town Council councillor on Saturday to hold the party’s flag in the forthcoming by-election.
Meanwhile in the rulling party camp, 10 aspirants have reportedly picked nomination forms to tussle it out in the primaries.They include Queen Dorothy Amolo, Willy Omodo Omodo; Samuel Engola Junior, the son of the former Oyam North MP and former ambassador Julius Peter Moto.
Others are Augustine Obangakene, Billie Otto a Veterant journalist who turned a politican, Daniel Bala, Alfred Okello Obaro, Tonny Adonyo and Henry Arinaitwe.
