Local leaders and community members on Monday came together to honor the late Martin Odur, known as “The Ghetto President,” for his contributions towards the welfare and development of street children. Odur, who was the leader of children living on the streets in Lango Sub-region, was knocked dead by a speeding car last Monday, May 22, 2023.
During his send-off in Ngetta on Monday 29th May, Lira City, several revelations emerged about Odur’s dedication to advocating for the welfare of street children. At the time of his death, he had withdrawn several children from the street, linked others for vocational training, and enrolled 52 kids at Lango Quran Primary School in Lira.
Sarah Ruth Apio, the head teacher of the school, praised Odur for being a father figure to all children in the ghetto, regardless of their tribe. She stated, “He has been a caring father to all these kids without segregating them, and the ghetto comprises of children of different tribes.”
Lira City West Mayor George Okello Ayo described the late Odur as a humble, courageous, and creative personality who contributed significantly to rallying children living in the ghetto to participate in government programs. He also expressed his disappointment regarding the tragic incident and warned car owners always to be cautious when handing over their car keys.

The Ghetto Prime Minister and musician Stephen Odongo, also known as Code de Yo, said he learned a lot while working with Odur, adding that his leadership skills have enhanced through him. He noted that Odur always motivated his fellows to work hard, no matter the situation.
Patrick Awongo, the Northern Chief Whip of the MK Army, acknowledged that the late Odur played a critical role in mobilizing for the National Resistance Movement party and recently coordinated for the MK Movement.
