The Territorial Police in Lira have strongly condemned the violent altercation involving rising dancehall artist Ogwang Walter, known as Lil Square, and his former manager, Awio Isaac, a proprietor of Awio Scrap Dealers.

The incident unfolded today on Obote Avenue in Lira City, where Awio and six alleged accomplices, including hired bouncers, reportedly assaulted Lil Square and damaged his vehicle, a white Toyota Max 2 Grand (registration number UAU 045Q).

A video circulating on social media shows Awio’s group parking in front of the artist’s car before launching the attack, which included smashing the vehicle’s windshield.

Police promptly responded to the scene, apprehending some suspects and transporting them to the Lira City Central Police Station for further questioning.

A case of assault and malicious damage has been registered, and authorities have called for public cooperation as investigations continue.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police spokesperson, assured the public of a thorough investigation, stating, “We will investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that the perpetrators of violence are brought to justice.”

Backround

The altercation stems from a financial dispute between Lil Square and Awio. The former manager accused the musician of breaching their three-year management contract signed in August 2023. Awio claims Lil Square owes him UGX 10 million and has threatened to repossess the artist’s vehicle to recover the debt.

Awio alleges he played a significant role in Lil Square’s rise to fame, investing heavily in his career. However, their relationship soured in late 2023 when Awio announced his decision to leave the music industry to focus on religious ministry.

From the other end, Lil Square has refuted the claims on social media, alleging that Awio exploited him financially during their partnership. The artist contends he was already established before Awio’s involvement and accused his former manager of diverting funds meant for his career to personal ventures, including constructing Heavens Hotel and promoting another artist.

“All my bookings went through him, and I barely saw any of the money,” Lil Square wrote. He also criticized Awio’s alleged inconsistency, stating, “If he wants to see the real me, let him try!”

Broader Concerns Over Violence in Uganda’s Music Scene

This incident in Lira comes amid reports of another violent altercation in Kampala, where musician Mayanja Pius, alias Pallaso, and his associates allegedly attacked the residence of fellow artist Patrick Mulwana, alias Alien Skin.

The confrontation, which reportedly began over a performance disagreement, led to significant property damage, including a burnt Range Rover, shattered vehicle windows, and smashed house windows.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the two separate attacks at Alien Skin’s residence on January 2, 2025.

In response to escalating violence, State Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Balaam Barugahara, has announced a six-month boycott of artists involved in gang-related violence.

“Gang violence is spiraling out of control, and it’s time for decisive action. Leaders and sponsors of these gangs must be held accountable for their destructive influence,” Barugahara stated.

The police and industry leaders have appealed for calm and cooperation, emphasizing the need to restore discipline and professionalism in Uganda’s music scene.
