The territorial police in Lira-City Central Police Station (CPS) and the North Kyoga region’s flying squad intercepted a suspected stolen vehicle, resulting in injuries to three occupants and one police officer. The incident happend in Adwali cell, Boroboro ward, Lira-City East Division, on Thursday 9th of November, at approximately 11:00 hours.
The chain of events was set into motion when a report was received, indicating that a black Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number KDH 790K, suspected to be stolen from Kenya, had entered Uganda.
The vehicle’s origin was traced back to Ref OB 24/9/11/2023 of Karuri police station in Nairobi. This triggered an alert across various police stations in Uganda, including Busia, Tororo, Mbale, Soroti, and Lira, all tracking the movement of the suspicious vehicle.
Upon receiving this information, the Division Police Commander (DPC) of Lira-City CPS led a team of the flying squad, referencing SD Ref 05/09/11/2023, to establish a checkpoint at Adwali cell along the Lira-Soroti highway.
Accroding to the reports by the North Kyoga Police person, SP jimmy Patrick Okema, the driver refused to stop and instead accelerated when the suspected stolen vehicle was intercepted, prompting the police to respond by firing shots at the vehicle, specifically targeting the tires. Unfortunately, in the ensuing confrontation, three occupants and one police officer sustained injuries.
The injured individuals are identified as Otyato George, 49 years old, a resident of Awendo in Migoli County, Kenya, Akako Husein, 54 years old, from Tororo-Malaba and Omara Paul, age not established, a resident of Oyugisi Homabeyi County in Kenya.
In addition to injuries, a police officer identified as Ebong Tonny was injured in the stomach during the operation. All the injured parties have been promptly transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment, while the suspects are currently under police guard.
SP Okema further notes that there has been allegations that the occupants attempted to mislead the police by replacing the vehicle’s registration plate with “UBE 665K” while in Dokolo. The suspected stolen vehicle has since been impounded and is currently parked at Lira-City CPS, pending a thorough search.
Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend an individual who is alleged to have escaped during the gunfire exchange. The police appeal to community members to assist in locating and handing over the fugitive to the authorities for further legal proceedings.
