The race which is attracting significant attention within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) camp, sees incumbent Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero facing a spirited challenge from Sarah Awor Angweri, the Lira City female workers’ councilor.

Sarah Awor Angweri officially announced her candidacy on November 20, 2024, emphasizing her vision of unity, development, and youth empowerment. Through pledging transformative leadership, Awor she will capture support from youth groups and key stakeholders in Lira City.

However, her bid has also drawn criticism from certain factions within the party, who view her decision as divisive.

“I am not intimidated by anyone vying for this position. The Ugandan Constitution grants me the right to contest, and I will not let my supporters down,” Awor declared during her announcement.

The announcement has sparked debates about generational change in leadership, with Awor’s supporters advocating for youthful representation in Parliament.

Others, however remain loyal to Dr. Aceng, citing her substantial contributions to healthcare and infrastructure in the region.

On Sunday, a team of senior NRM cadres convened at Lira Hotel to strategize and address the growing tension within the party.

The meeting, held in support of Dr. Aceng, highlighted her transformative leadership and significant contributions, including the upgrade of Lira Regional Referral Hospital and improvements to health centers across the region.

“Dr. Aceng’s work speaks for itself,” said Okot George, a senior cadre. “She has transformed healthcare and infrastructure in Lira City, making her the most qualified candidate for the 2026 elections.”

Moses Opio Obaa, another cadre, praised Dr. Aceng’s ability to unite people across political divides, describing her as the ideal candidate to retain the Lira City Woman seat.

The meeting also addressed challenges posed by Awor’s candidacy and rumors of Minister Betty Amongi Akena’s interest in the seat. Cadres questioned Amongi’s motives, suggesting she focus on her constituency in Oyam instead of contesting in Lira City.

“Leadership requires a proven track record, and Dr. Aceng has consistently delivered results,” said Patrick Okwir Kampala.

Apac district Assistant RDC Okot Jonal urged cadres to focus on promoting the NRM’s Prosperity and Wealth Creation programs while avoiding divisive politics.

“Our mission is to mobilize people for socio-economic transformation,” Jonal stated. “Dr. Aceng is a shining example of what we can achieve through unity.”
