Political Atmosphere Heats Up in Dokolo Ahead of By-Election

Dokolo district finds itself at the epicentre of political pressure as various parties gear up for the forthcoming by-election to fill the vacant Dokolo District Woman MP seat. Following the passing of FDC’s Cecilia Ogwal, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has taken significant strides in mobilizing its campaign mechanism.

On Saturday, 17th Feb 2024, NUP initiated its campaign mobilization team, unveiling approximately 300 mobilizers dedicated to rallying support for the party’s candidate.

Led by NUP’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, a delegation met with party leaders from all 14 sub-counties in the district to bolster support for their cause. Rubongoya emphasized the party’s nationwide presence, highlighting the importance of grassroots engagement.

Rubongoya stressed the need for vigilance among Dokolo residents during the critical period leading up to the by-election, cautioning against the influence of bribery tactics often associated with politics.

While one individual has expressed interest in contesting under the NUP indentity, Rubongoya affirmed the party’s commitment to holding primary elections should more candidates emerge.

However, NUP officials raised concerns about alleged threats from district security agencies, citing challenges faced by mobilizers accused of engaging in rebel activities.

Asege Jojo, the NUP Northern coordinator, dismissed such allegations, reaffirming the party’s dedication to peaceful political engagement.

Ageno Harriet, a former NRM cadre now vying as the NUP flag bearer, expressed confidence in the party’s structure, drawing inspiration from Cecilia Ogwal’s legacy.

Simultaneously, the NRM party unveiled Janet Adongo Elau as its official candidate, amidst the withdrawal of two candidates and the decision of five others to run independently.

Hon. Rosemary Nansubuga Sseninde, the party’s mobilization secretary, cautioned independent aspirants against betraying party principles, emphasizing the absence of independent-leaning NRM candidates in the party’s constitution.

The Dokolo Woman MP seat fell vacant following Cecilia Barbra Atim Ogwal’s demise, prompting over thirteen women to express interest in the seat, including Cecilia’s daughter, Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal. The by-election is scheduled for March 21st, adding intensity to the charged political atmosphere in the district.
