It is still a shock to the ears of many Ugandans after a village man in Wera Subcounty , Amuria District slapped the State Minister for Works Musa Ecweru under unclear circumstances.
On Sunday morning at 11:30am during mass at St. Michael Catholic Church, 39 year old Michael Okurut, a resident of Wera comfortably moved past security and hit the minister hard on the left cheek, leaving his stamped finger prints.
Ecweru who also doubles as MP Amuria County had been invited to give a speech after donating a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture to Wera Catholic Parish locals.
It is at that moment that the Okurut suddenly made his way into the church building, marching straight to the altar where he knelt for a brief prayer before moving towards his target.
Okurut walked to the Minister, whispered something in his ear and proceeded with a hard slap that left the Minister holding his ear in pain. He was about to add another dose of pain on the Minister when his security detail swung into action and carried him out of the church.
Police in Amuria later picked the suspect and have since locked him up on assault charges.
Locals who prefer anonymity claim Okurut demanded that the Minister give him money and slapped him when he didn’t respond. They claim that before he walked into the church, he boasted how he is going to come out richer to a few of his colleagues.
As police proceeds with investigations, sources claim that Okurut has a history of mental illness that should be checked by police before further action is taken
