Authorities in Lira have taken action against fake seed dealers who have penetrated the markets and believed to have exploited vulnerable farmers.

The shortage of the highly desirable maize seed variety DK777 has intensified the problem, leading to an entry of fake seeds in the market. DK777 is a popular maize seed variety that sells for forty thousand shillings per packet according to the Lira Ddistrict Agricultural Officer, Mr. Patrick Alip.

In response, the District officials and the association of Agro Input dealers in Lira launched an operation on Wednesday where over two tons of counterfeit seeds were seized from the market. Some shop owners even closed their establishments upon hearing about the team’s arrival, indicating their awareness of selling fake products.

The production department has also expressed concern over unwary farmers falling victim to counterfeit seed makers. An SMS-based technology that utilizes codes to protect brands has been introduced as away to fight this problem.

Despite these measures, the dealers are urging the parliament to strengthen laws against counterfeit activities meanwhile other input dealers held a meeting and collectively agreed to publicly name and shame any shops found selling counterfeit products in order to safeguard their market.

Counterfeit seeds pose a significant threat to the livelihoods of farmers, who rely on genuine and high-quality inputs for their agricultural activities. The collaborative efforts of input dealers aim to protect farmers from financial losses and ensure the integrity of the agricultural sector in Lira.
