Ugandans to Have Safe and Affordable Drinking Water by 2030: Minister Sekindi

The Minister of State for Water, Aisha Sekindi, has assured Ugandans that they will have access to safe and affordable drinking water by 2030. This optimistic projection is bolstered by the Sustainable Climate Impact Fund’s (SCIF) commitment to enhancing health, wellbeing, and socio-economic opportunities in climate-affected communities, including Kalungu, Lyantonde, and Kabarole districts.

Speaking at a climate change action seminar at Maple Leaf Hotel, Masaka, Minister Sekindi reiterated Uganda’s goal to achieve universal access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation by 2030. She emphasized the country’s dedication to high-quality scientific research and capacity building to improve health outcomes.

The seminar, hosted by SCIF, highlighted its efforts to refurbish non-functional water points, significantly reducing health risks. SCIF collaborates with Water Aid Uganda to provide community hygiene education and promote environmental conservation.

Addressing journalists, Ola Bankole, SCIF Operations Lead, noted the positive impact of the SCIF Safe Water project, including a reduction in waterborne diseases and increased economic opportunities for women. “We are delighted that our SCIF Safe Water project is changing people’s lives for the better. We know from health centers that cases of waterborne diseases have reduced where SCIF has refurbished boreholes and women have been able to grow their businesses,” said Bankole.

Minister Sekindi’s address and the SCIF seminar underscore a collaborative effort to ensure safe water access and improved sanitation in Uganda, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable development.
