Traffic Police, Good Motor Driving School Collaborate to Enhance Road Safety Ahead of Festive Season

With the festive season fast approaching, the Traffic Police in North Kyoga sub-region have taken proactive measures to reduce the alarming rates of accidents in the area.

According to the Regional Police Traffic Officer, SP Mathius Okwir, a staggering 74 accidents were reported in August 2023. Shockingly, 21 of these accidents resulted in fatalities, claiming the lives of 24 individuals, while 45 accidents left 69 people with serious injuries and 8 were minor incidents.

SP Mathius Okwir highlighted that human error and a disregard for traffic rules among road users were the primary causes of this concerning trend.

In response to this crisis, North Kyoga Traffic Police, in collaboration with Good Motor Driving School, has introduced refresher courses targeting both drivers and boda boda riders in the region. The primary objective is to equip them with essential skills and knowledge to mitigate accidents, especially during the upcoming festive season.

David Okello, Director of Good Motor Driving School, underscored the significance of defensive driving in ensuring road safety. He urged drivers to participate in these refresher courses early, aiming to decrease the accident rates that often spike during holiday periods.

Additionally, SP Okwir issued a stern warning to both traffic officers and road users, emphasizing the importance of fair and ethical conduct on the roads while cautioning against bribery. He stated that individuals involved in bribery, whether drivers or officers, would face legal consequences.

The launch of these refresher courses received a positive response from road users in the region. Many individuals actively welcomed the program during a gathering at Lira City Council Hall on Sunday 15th October 2023. They emphasized the importance of learning aspects not typically covered in standard driving schools.

Tonny Obong, a taxi driver operating along the Lira-Amolatar Road, praised the training for providing him with knowledge and skills not acquired in traditional driving schools. He expressed his belief that continuous training would elevate him to become one of the expert drivers in Northern Uganda.

Looking ahead, Good Motor Driving School plans to train over 1,000 drivers in the region, equipping them with fundamental skills and knowledge in defensive driving to enhance road safety. As the festive season approaches, the collaboration between North Kyoga Traffic Police and Good Motor Driving School aims to significantly reduce accidents and save lives on the region’s roads.
