In a parliamentary session on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa voiced strong criticism against both public and private secondary school owners for imposing exorbitant school fees as the new school term commenced this week.
The media has been flooded with reports on the fee structures of various schools nationwide, revealing shocking figures, with some institutions charging as high as Shs4 million per term. These revelations have surfaced just ahead of the selection process for Senior One students.
Tayebwa, while presiding over the session, emphasized the urgency of addressing this critical issue. He expressed concern that despite extensive discussions within the House and clear government directives, the situation appears to be worsening.
“This is a matter we have extensively discussed in this House, and I have seen several circulars from the government regarding that matter, providing very clear guidelines. However, the situation seems to be getting worse,” remarked Tayebwa.
In response to the escalating problem, Tayebwa directed the Minister of Education and Sports to present a statement on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, outlining punitive measures against schools that have defied government directives on high school fees charges.
“It is a very critical matter which I want us to give the due attention it deserves,” Tayebwa asserted. He highlighted the need to reprimand schools that have blatantly disregarded previous government directives, emphasizing the impact such fees could have on students’ access to education.
Adding a personal touch to his statement, Tayebwa reflected on the backgrounds of the parliamentarians, stating, “Considering our backgrounds, I am sure most of us, if faced with such circumstances, would not have had the opportunity to pursue our studies and be present in this House.”.
