APAC District – The authorities of APAC District have launched an investigation into a devastating incident in which a group of individuals drowned in the waters of River Nile.

According to the reports by the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, SP. Jimmy Patrick Okema, the incident occurred on July 10th, 2023, at approximately 4:00 a.m. The report was filed by Okule Gabriel, a 19-year-old Karamajong supervisor at the Indian palm oil farm in Maruzi ranch, Apac District.

The individuals who tragically lost their lives in this unfortunate event have been identified as follows: Lotyang Peter (19 years old), Lemukol Simon (18 years old), Lotham Simon (30 years old), Lomuria John (15 years old), Kamur Nomha (21 years old), Ngole Simon (21 years old), Lonta Joseph (19 years old), Lucumwa Simon (35 years old), and Lokuwam Joseph (19 years old).

Among those involved, four individuals managed to survive the incident. They have been identified as Muleka Bosco, Byekwaso Godfrey, Locire Simon, and Lukwampe Peter. Muleka Bosco and Byekwaso Godfrey were riding in separate boats, while Locire Simon and Lukwampe Peter were passengers.

It is alleged that on the night of July 9th, 2023, thirteen workers from the Maruzi palm oil project farm left their workplace due to non-payment issues with the management of the Indian farm. Their intention was to seek employment elsewhere in Masindi District.

However, upon arriving at Kungu landing site, they discovered that the ferry was not operational. In an attempt to cross to Masindi port landing site, they boarded a small canoe. Tragically, the canoe capsized, leading to the drowning of all thirteen individuals, with only four managing to survive.

The Kungu Police Post was immediately informed of the incident, and a case of drowning has been registered. The four survivors were swiftly transported to a nearby health center for medical treatment. Meanwhile, search and rescue operations are currently underway to recover the bodies of the nine deceased victims.

SP. Okema further called upon workers facing challenges in their workplaces to approach the office of labor officers, which can be found in all District Local Government offices across the country, to seek assistance and resolution before making either decisions.
