On Sunday 10th July, there was jubilation at Lira main market on the reconnection of water supply at the market that had been disconnected nearly 10 years ago when Lira City was still a municipality.
Witnessed by the Minister of Health Hon. Jane Ruth Acheng who also doubles as the woman Member of Parliament Lira City, water shortage and electricity were some of key problems the market vendors were facing.
The Minister said it had taken nearly 10 years since Water flow was disconnected by the National Water and Sewage Cooperation due to accumulated water bills since the regime of Lira Municipal Council.
She added the market vendors had cried for so long since Lira Municipal Regime but Lira City Council has come address their matters.
Dr. Acheng is also calling upon the market vendors and the general public to take responsibilities in ensuring that Water and electricity are not disconnected again.“We have to take responsibility so that Water is not disconnected again so that our market is clean.” Said Acheng.
Addressing journalists at the City Council she assures the public that the council will lay out a strategy on how the bills are to be paid so that the market do not meet the challenges again…” Said Dr. Acheng.
While at the Market, Dr. Acheng also discovered that some parts of the market were dark where she emphasised that adequate voltage and bulbs should be set to the market to ensure that business boosts on even in the nights.
Meanwhile the Lira City Mayor, thanked Dr. Acheng saying restoration of water is among the 7 items the City Council cited to ensure, Lira Main Market is one of the best Markets in the country.
The 7 items includes, collection of garbage in and around the market area, reconnection of water flow, restoration of electricity in the market.
Lira main market had an accumulated water bills of about UGX.40 Million of which the council have managed to pay UGX 25 million to the Uganda National Water and Sewage Cooperation.
