Cheptegei to Lead Uganda’s Charge at 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships

Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, holder of multiple world records, is set to lead Uganda’s contingent at the upcoming 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, scheduled for March 30.

Expressing his optimism, Cheptegei stated to Xinhua that despite anticipating tough competition, he firmly believes in Uganda’s potential to clinch the gold medal.

“Our team is undergoing thorough preparation, and I have full confidence in our abilities to excel in Serbia,” affirmed Cheptegei, who previously secured the 5,000m gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Joining Cheptegei in bolstering Uganda’s prospects is Jacob Kiplimo, an Olympic bronze medalist, who aims to defend his title in the 10km category.

According to Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), both the senior and junior teams have undergone rigorous training, positioning them favorably to secure medals for their nation.

Despite the formidable challenge posed by Kenya and Ethiopia, Uganda’s teams are poised to vie fiercely for top honors, having previously secured third place finishes in both the men’s and women’s senior categories at the preceding championship.
