Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy James Michael Akena has called for the strengthening of veterinary services before restocking livestock in the country.
Speaking in Kaberamaido district, Akena emphasized the need for disease control and support for veterinary doctors to ensure the sustainability of livestock farming.
“All over in Lango, in Teso, in Acholi, there used to be deep tanks. Are they working today?” Akena questioned.
He warned that without strong veterinary services, restocking animals would be in vain as diseases could wipe them out. He criticized leaders who promise to compensate livestock without addressing the underlying challenges, stating, “That person is lying. I’m not a liar.”
Akena also spoke passionately about fishermen’s rights, referencing the biblical story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with fish and bread. He highlighted that fishing has long been a means of survival for lakeside communities but lamented that access to water resources is being restricted.
“They think God gave this fish here for somebody who lives abroad. That fish is first for the people around the lake,” he asserted.
The UPC leader vowed to challenge unfair government policies and called for the return of policies that empower fishermen, including giving them control over refrigerated trucks to boost their livelihoods.
He criticized the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), accusing them of suppressing democracy and pushing for a one-party state.
Akena reaffirmed his commitment to running for president in 2026, declaring, “Change is coming. I am bringing UPC back where it can serve the people of Uganda.” He urged supporters to register with UPC structures and promised to fight for the interests of ordinary Ugandans. “Akena is here. And the ballot Akena will be there,” he concluded.
