In order to promote innovation and creativity among Ugandan students, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has launched its 35th Technology and Innovation Support Centre at Camboni College.
The launch event, officiated by Lira Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, emphasized the crucial role of science and technology in driving development. Bishop Wanok urged teachers to leverage the new center to improve the teaching of these subjects.
Speaking at the event, Bishop Wanok highlighted concerns about the current state of Uganda’s education system, noting that it has veered away from its true purpose. “Education has lost its trend because people wanted to focus our attention mainly on the result of education, which is money,” he remarked.
He criticized the rush for certificates without ensuring a deep understanding of subjects, warning that this approach limits the holistic development education should foster.
However, he expressed optimism that Uganda is rediscovering the original meaning of education, which is centered on innovation and development.
“We have started putting our feet down, and the result is innovation and development,” he said, hoping that the initiative would spark creativity among students and encourage teamwork.
Deputy Registrar General Alex Anganya underscored the importance of the center, describing it as part of URSB’s broader initiative to promote creativity and invention in schools across the country.
He highlighted that the Technology and Innovation Support Centre at Camboni College is expected to boost creativity and technological growth in secondary schools throughout Lango.
Mr. Anganya further mentioned that URSB aims to support young innovators by connecting them with markets, stakeholders, and resources, enabling them to turn their prototypes into viable commercial ventures.
Camboni College teacher Owiny Ceaser Okello also shared his excitement about the launch, citing students’ innovative projects such as the Solar Concentrator, Non-Fuel Generator, Traffic Light, Security Alarm, and Auto Garbage Management System. He sees the new center as a critical step towards nurturing talent and alleviating poverty through technology.
The URSB plans to open another Technology and Innovation Support Centre today at Dr. Obote College, further cementing Lango’s role in advancing Uganda’s innovation landscape.
Camboni College’s strong reputation for innovation was bolstered last year when it won the 2023 Stanbic National Schools Championship, showcasing the potential of young Ugandans to develop solutions to real-world challenges.
