The accidents included 16 fatal cases, 21 serious cases, and 8 minor cases, with Lira District recording the highest number of fatalities at four. Other districts like Dokolo, Kole, Kwania, and Oyam also reported fatal accidents. Serious accidents were particularly prevalent in Dokolo and Lira, which reported 9 and 8 cases, respectively.
The report cited reckless driving, overspeeding, dangerous loading, poor road conditions, and the growing issue of drivers using mobile phones while driving as the primary causes of these accidents.
In addition to the accident report, SP Okema provided an overview of crime statistics for May to July 2024, revealing 60 murder cases, including 18 from mob action and 34 related to domestic violence.
The region also recorded 12 rape cases, 190 defilement cases, and 259 child-related crimes. There were also 242 home break-ins, 978 assaults, and 315 domestic violence cases.

Despite a slight decrease in crime rates over the three months, SP Okema stressed the ongoing challenges, such as community reluctance to engage in crime investigations, lack of cooperation, and crime scene interference.
SP Okema urged the public to actively report and follow up on crimes, stressing the need to preserve crime scenes for effective investigations.
He also reaffirmed the police’s commitment to strengthening community policing, increasing media engagement, and enforcing the law to tackle these challenges.
