The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Brigadier General Stephen Kigundu, the Deputy Commander of UPDF Air Force. The armed force announced the heartbreaking news on Sunday, leaving the nation in shock and sorrow.
In a statement signed by Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs, UPDF conveyed the devastating news of Brig Gen Kigundu’s untimely demise. The statement revealed that Brig Gen Kigundu passed away in the evening of March 31, 2024, at his official residence in Entebbe.

According to UPDF sources, Brig Gen Kigundu had been well throughout the day until Sunday evening when he tragically died in his bathroom. The sudden loss has left the UPDF fraternity and the Uganda Peoples Defence Air Force deeply saddened, particularly at a time when Brig Gen Kigundu’s expertise and leadership were crucial in strengthening the Air Force capabilities.
A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, disclosed that they received information from Katabi Air Force Barracks under Entebbe Division indicating that Brig Gen Kigundu had been electrocuted. It is alleged that while bathing, a water heater fell on him, resulting in the fatal accident.
Brig Gen Kigundu’s last public appearance was noted at the 4th Division Headquarters in Gulu on March 28, 2024, during an event where Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba assumed the role of Chief of Defence Forces, succeeding Gen Wilson Mbadi.
President Museveni, in his capacity as the Commander In-Chief of the Armed Forces, had promoted Stephen Kigundu to the rank of Brig Gen from Lt. Col on November 7, 2022, and appointed him as the Deputy Commander of Air Forces.
