St. John XXIII Hospital, widely known as Atapara or Aber Hospital, is set to commission the first ever peritoneal dialysis machines on Friday February 23, 2024.
This will be the only hospital in Northern Uganda offering the service of the machine.
Peritoneal dialysis is a way to remove waste products from the blood. It’s a treatment for kidney failure, a condition where the kidneys can’t filter blood well enough any longer.
Unlike in other dialysis processes where the blood is drained from the body and cleansed outside by a machine then administered back into the body, during peritoneal dialysis, a cleansing fluid is administered to the abdomen through a tube into the peritoneum. The fluid acts as a filter and removes wastes from blood after a set amount of time after which the filtered waste flows out of the abdomen and is thrown away.
This significant development marks a pivotal moment for the community, eliminating the need for long-distance travel for certain diseases, particularly kidney-related conditions.
In November last year, the hospital implantated the first Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter on a patient, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to advanced medical interventions.
A multidisciplinary team of surgeons, physicians, nephrologists, and specialists successfully performed the procedure. The patient subsequently underwent the inaugural peritoneal dialysis session on Thursday, November 9th, 2023, marking a milestone in Aber Hospital’s medical achievements.
These advancements align with the hospital’s comprehensive services, which include General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, 24-hour Emergency Services, and specialized investigations such as CT scan, Cardiac Echo, Digital X-ray, and Ultrasound services.
