UPC Fronts Aguti Sarah as Party Flag Bearer in Dokolo By-Election.

In adherence to the UPC’s constitutional framework, Article 11.6 took center stage as the UPC district conference, presided over by the UPC district chairperson, convened to unveil the parliamentary candidate for the Dokolo by-election. The high-stakes event held on Monday at Dokolo Catholic Parish, marking a pivotal moment in the district political landscape

The tension-filled atmosphere saw William Onyanga, the UPC party registrar, finally declare Aguti Sarah as the uncontested candidate for the Dokolo by-election. This announcement came following the withdrawal of two formidable contenders, Acen Josephine, the Amolatar district education officer, and Anna Okwir, a former Dokolo district councilor, who initially threw their hats into the ring under the UPC banner.

Fred Arim Ogera, representing Kangai Sub County, stepped forward to nominate Aguti Sarah, a motion swiftly seconded by Richard Okao, the UPC chairperson for Dokolo North constituency. Okao’s commendation of Aguti for her unwavering commitment to the party backed by the conference attendees, highlighting her credibility and dedication.

Accepting the prestigious party flag, Aguti Sarah Nyangkori, a notable scholar in Social Work and Social Administration with postgraduate qualifications in Administrative Law and Monitoring and Evaluation, voiced her vision for the constituency. She pledged to prioritize critical issues such as healthcare, education, and unemployment, vowing to enact positive change for the community.

Amidst the political commitment, Jimmy Awany, a political assistant to Jimmy James Michael Akena of Lira City East division, issued a stern warning against the endorsement of leadership based on heritable lines. His impassioned plea urged the communities of Lango to uphold meritocracy and societal responsibility, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement in fostering their children’s education.

Meanwhile, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) unveiled their respective candidates, Janet Adongo and Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal, setting the stage for a fiercely contested by-election.

The Electoral Commission has outlined the nomination period for aspiring candidates, scheduled from March 11 to 12, followed by a rigorous week-long campaign from March 13 to 19.

The vacancy in the Dokolo District Woman MP seat, precipitated by the untimely passing of former Woman MP, Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal, aged 77, has left a palpable void in the political arena. Her recent demise on January 18 in an Indian hospital, followed by a solemn burial in Alito, Kole district, on January 27, has left constituents grappling with the loss of a stalwart figure in regional politics.
