Drivers blame gov’t for neglecting them

The United Bus Drivers Association is blaming the government for neglecting the Driver’s profession in Uganda.

Most drivers have been on the spot for being the leading cause of road crashes in the country.

Figures from the African Centre for Media Excellence, ACME, show that 41% of the road crashes between 2011 to 2020 were caused by careless driving while 31.6% of the crashes were due to reckless driving.

However, the Bus Association secretary Ibrahim Kayondo says before they shift the blame on them, the government has not put in place a structured program to manage the industry.

Kayondo decries the lack of a driver’s curriculum and recognized driver schools in the country.

In response, the Commissioner of Transport Regulation and Safety at the Ministry of Works and Transport, Winstone Katushabe accuses the drivers of not cooperating with the government.

He reveals that many drivers and bus owners have shunned their refresher training calls.
