Minister of Health and Woman Member of Parliament for Lira City, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, has called upon parents, teachers, and community leaders to discourage the use of family planning methods among school-going girls.
Speaking at the belated International Women’s Day celebrations held at Mayor’s Garden in Lira City, Dr. Aceng emphasized that such methods should be reserved for use after marriage, urging stakeholders to guide young girls toward decisions that are rooted in cultural and moral values.
The Minister stressed the importance of mentorship and support for young girls, encouraging mothers and female guardians to have open conversations with their daughters about responsible choices and the value of education.
“Let us nurture disciplined, well-guided youth for a healthier and more responsible future,” she said, highlighting the role of women in shaping the next generation.
Joining in the celebrations, the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magezi, delivered a strong message advocating for the empowerment of women and girls through education, wealth creation, and leadership.
He underscored education as a tool to break the cycle of poverty and inequality and called for community support to ensure girls have access to quality learning.
“Vocational training, entrepreneurship programs, and financial inclusion are essential to enabling women to become self-reliant,” said Minister Magezi. He further emphasized the importance of inclusive governance, noting that “a society that uplifts its women secures its future.”
Lira City Mayor, His Worship Sam Atul, called for greater investment in women-led initiatives. He urged local leaders, organizations, and private sector partners to support women entrepreneurs, saying that empowering women economically is vital to sustainable development.
Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Lira City, Egole Lawrence, encouraged young girls to emulate Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, praising her resilience and leadership in both the health and political arenas. He called on girls to stay focused on their education, maintain discipline, and strive for excellence, stating that determination is key to overcoming challenges.
