Dr. Sharon Okello Awarded for Her Role in Economic Empowerment of Women

President Museveni Awards Dr. Sharon Okello Nagenjwa alias Girl From Oyam a Diamond Jubilee Medal on International Women’s Day in Kyankwanzi District

On International Women’s Day, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni honored exceptional individuals with Diamond Jubilee medals in recognition of their dedicated service to Uganda.

Among the 46 recipients of the prestigious award was Dr. Sharon Okello Nagenjwa, the CEO of NUWEBIZ Foundation Ltd, who was awarded a Diamond Jubilee medal for her significant contributions to women’s empowerment and sustainable development in Uganda.

In a heartfelt statement, Dr. Okello expressed her gratitude for the recognition: “The Lord has done it. My country has honored me with a Diamond Jubilee medal. I will continue serving my country. This is dedicated to all the women out there.”

The awards ceremony, which took place in Kyankwanzi District, highlighted the tireless efforts of women and men who have made remarkable contributions to their communities.

Among the 46 recipients, four were men, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the awards. President Museveni praised the recipients for their dedication to improving the lives of others, especially women, in their respective fields.

Dr. Okello, a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment, family stability, and sustainable development, has led several initiatives to uplift women in Uganda, particularly in Northern Uganda’s refugee-hosting districts.

Through her leadership under NUWEBIZ Foundation Ltd, she has spearheaded the Generating Growth Opportunities for Women (GROW) initiative, which aims to provide women in refugee districts with vital skills for economic independence.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, the Private Sector Foundation, and the World Bank, the GROW initiative has successfully empowered hundreds of women from districts like Lamwo, Arua, and Adjumani.

The program provides hands-on training in tailoring, hairdressing, soap making, and baking, enabling women to diversify their income streams and build more sustainable livelihoods.

Dr. Okello’s work has been instrumental in providing these women with not only technical skills but also the confidence and resources needed to overcome the challenges they face as refugees.

Through these initiatives, she continues to foster economic independence, stability, and empowerment for women in some of Uganda’s most marginalized communities.

Her commitment to gender equality and women’s economic empowerment aligns with her broader vision of creating a more inclusive and prosperous Uganda, and her Diamond Jubilee award further solidifies her place as a leading advocate for the women of Uganda.
