Football powerhouse, Mentor Secondary School today successfully defended their title at the USSSA Lira City football tournament in the boys’ category, defeating Dr. Obote College (DOC) 3-0.
The highly contested match took place at Ambalal Primary School under a scorching sun, attracting a diverse crowd that included parents, students, security personnel, and political leaders.
Both teams had impressive journeys to the final. Mentor SS secured their spot by triumphing over Lira Town College in a tense penalty shootout, winning 4-2. Meanwhile, DOC edged out King James Comprehensive Secondary School with a narrow 1-0 victory.
The match kicked off with high stakes. DOC aimed to snach the trophy from the defending champions but found themselves trailing shortly after the water break. Epila Emmanuel scored a brilliant free kick in the 20th minute, giving Mentor SS a 1-0 lead at halftime.
As the second half resumed, tensions ran high, with Mentor seeking to secure their lead while DOC pushed hard for an equalizer. After several attempts, Mentor’s Oyuru Gaberal Ogwang doubled the lead in the 71st minute. The final nail in DOC’s coffin was driven in by Odongo Marcus, who scored in the 76th minute, concluding the match at 3-0.
With this victory, Mentor SS and DOC, along with three other schools ie Comboni College, Lira Town College, and Faith SS,will represent Lira City in the upcoming Lango Zonal USSSA tournament, scheduled for April 7-12, 2025, hosted by Dr. Obote College.
