Ministry of Works and Transport Extends Closure of Karuma Bridge.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced an extension of the closure of the Karuma and Ayago Bridges until Monday, March 17, 2025. This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to facilitate necessary repairs on the Masindi Port Ferry, one of the key alternative routes for motorists.

In an official statement, the ministry emphasized that the extension is crucial to the completion of the installation of expansion joints, as initially scheduled. “To facilitate the installation of expansion joints as earlier planned, both Karuma and Ayago Bridges will remain inaccessible to all traffic,” the statement read.

The two bridges, which are vital links on major transportation routes, are expected to reopen on April 7, 2025. During this period, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes to ensure smooth travel.

For those traveling between Kampala and Gulu or West Nile, the ministry recommends using the Luwero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park)-Pakwach route or continuing via Olwiyo. Travelers heading to Lira from Kampala are advised to follow the Iganga-Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti-Lira route.

The ministry has urged the public to remain patient during this period and expressed regret over any inconvenience caused. “We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and cooperation,” the statement concluded.

Karuma Bridge, a critical part of the Kampala-Gulu Highway, sustained significant damage last year due to wear and tear, prompting the initiation of urgent repairs in 2024. Following these repairs, the bridge was reopened in December 2024 but restricted to light vehicles to ease travel during the festive season.

Ayago Bridge, located on the Karuma–Olwiyo Road, is also undergoing expansion joint installation. The current joints on the bridge have been damaged by fatigue, making repairs essential for continued safe operation.
