The territorial police in Amolatar District have launched an investigation into a case of murder by assault that occurred in Ogenga Village, Abwong Parish, Arwotcek Sub-County, on the 8th of March 2025.
According to police reports, the incident took place on the 6th of March 2025, when the suspect, Owak Tom, returned home from a local drinking joint around 9:30 PM.
It is alleged that upon his return, he began to assault his wife, Apili Sarah, with a stick, accusing her of failing to bathe their children. The brutal assault left the victim severely injured, and she eventually lost consciousness.
A nurse from a nearby clinic was summoned to administer first aid before Apili Sarah was transported to Amai Community Hospital for further treatment. Despite the medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries on the morning of March 8, 2025.
The matter was reported to the police by a concerned local, Awanyi Peter, a 70-year-old man. Following the report, officers from Amolatar Central Police Station (CPS) immediately visited the scene and conducted an investigation. The crime scene was documented by the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), and witness statements were recorded. However, no physical exhibits were recovered from the site. The body of the deceased was taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The prime suspect, Owak Tom, remains at large, and police are intensifying efforts to apprehend him according to Police reports.
In a statement, the Northern Kyoga Police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed that the couple had a history of domestic misunderstandings, which frequently escalated into physical confrontations.
“This is not the first time we are registering such a case. We encourage local leaders and elders, particularly Awitongs, to intervene when such disagreements arise to prevent further tragedies,” SP Okema stated.
He also called on the suspect to surrender to the authorities. “We advise the suspect to turn himself in to any police facility for investigation and to answer to the charges that will be brought against him,” SP Okema added.
