The film industry in Northern Uganda is steadily developing despite facing challenges such as limited infrastructure to support filmmakers. However, the region has witnessed a rise in independent film festivals and awards, providing platforms for local talent to showcase their work.
While the Uganda Film Festival, organized by the government, is the most recognized event, over five independent festivals and awards take place annually in Kampala, offering further opportunities for filmmakers.
This year, Northern Uganda takes a bold step forward with the Northern Uganda Film Awards (NUFA) 2025, marking a significant milestone in the region’s cultural and cinematic landscape. Under the theme “Weaving Stories Which Connect, Preserve, and Share Our Rich Cultural Heritage Globally through Cinema,” NUFA aims to recognize and celebrate the efforts of filmmakers who bring native stories to life, fostering cultural preservation and storytelling on a global scale.
