Ministry of Works and Transport to Close Karuma Bridge for Essential Repairs

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the planned installation of expansion joints on Karuma Bridge, a critical infrastructure link along the Kampala–Gulu Highway. The works, scheduled to run from March 10 to March 31, 2025, will necessitate a complete closure of the bridge to all traffic.

The decision follows last year’s urgent repairs, which led to a partial reopening of Karuma Bridge on December 20, 2024, allowing only light vehicles to facilitate travel during the festive season. However, the Ministry now seeks to complete the remaining work to ensure the bridge’s long-term stability and full traffic restoration.

Additionally, expansion joints will be installed on Ayago Bridge (Karuma–Olwiyo Road), which has suffered damage due to fatigue over time.

Alternative Routes for Motorists

With the closure of Karuma Bridge, the Ministry has advised motorists to use the following alternative routes:

Kampala – Gulu/West Nile: Travel via Luwero – Kafu – Masindi – Paraa (through Murchison Falls National Park) – Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo (and vice versa)

Kampala – Lira: Use the Iganga – Nakalama – Tirinyi – Pallisa – Kumi – Soroti – Lira route (and vice versa)

Alternative route to Lira: Motorists may also use the Rwenkunye – Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry

The Ministry has urged all road users to plan their journeys accordingly and apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we undertake these critical repairs to enhance road safety and durability,” said Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport.
