Alebtong District Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Jimmy Okello, has called on youth who benefited from the Presidential Hub to put their newly acquired skills into practice to improve their livelihoods.
Speaking to 75 beneficiaries who recently completed a six-month technical education program at the Lango Zonal Presidential Hub, Commissioner Okello emphasized the importance of utilizing their skills to create opportunities for themselves and contribute to community development.
“By practicing what you learned, you can transform not only your life but also your community. This is the vision of the Presidential Hubs, to empower the youth and build a skilled workforce for Uganda’s future,” Commissioner Okello said.
The training program offered courses in tailoring, hairdressing, carpentry, mechanical engineering, and building and construction, among other fields.
The beneficiaries gathered at Alebtong Town Council to meet with a delegation from the Office of the President, which conducted follow-ups to assess the impact of the initiative.
Commissioner Okello urged the youth to prioritize discipline and safeguard their certificates, which he described as valuable assets for pursuing further studies and career opportunities.
“Keep your certificates, the discipline you demonstrated during training, and the knowledge you gained. These will open doors to further opportunities and help you build a sustainable future,” he said.
Commissioner Okello also encouraged the youth to enroll in government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) to access startup capital.
The Lango Zonal Presidential Hub is one of 19 hubs established nationwide by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. These hubs aim to equip young people with technical and vocational skills to meet job market demands. The training program covers areas such as carpentry and joinery, tailoring, building and construction, as well as welding and metal fabrication.
The initiative seeks to address youth unemployment by offering hands-on skills that empower participants to start businesses, gain employment, and elevate their livelihoods.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the program, which they believe has equipped them with practical skills and enhanced their career prospects.
“We are thankful to the government for this initiative. The training has given us confidence and the ability to create something meaningful for ourselves and I`m also training other youth ” Juma Okello said.
The Presidential Hubs represent a larger national effort to foster technical education and vocational training as key pillars of Uganda’s economic development strategy. By targeting youth in regions across the country, the hubs aim to reduce unemployment, encourage self-reliance, and contribute to the country’s industrial growth.
