Tragedy struck in Masaka City early this morning when a motor vehicle loaded with matooke was involved in a fatal accident that claimed one life and left seven others injured.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 5:30 am, involved a trailer with registration number KBD 88Y/ZCB9381, which had come from Mbarara and was offloading at different points in the city.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer failed to brake while offloading at Soweto market in Masaka City, causing it to overturn and go for a distance of about 2 kilometers into the garden. Namanda Rebecca, a resident of Nyendo, Masaka City, sadly lost her life on the spot as a result of the crash.
The seven people who sustained injuries were immediately taken to Masaka Referral Hospital and Mulago Referral Hospital for treatment. Their current condition is yet to be established.
The police have since cordoned off the scene of the accident to allow for investigations to be conducted. The body of the deceased has been taken to Masaka Mortuary for postmortem examination.
