Federal prosecutors in a case against musician R. Kelly have proposed he should be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.
The singer was convicted in September 2021 of nine counts of racketeering, child trafficking and exploitation.
According to Daily Mail, R. Kelly’s case emanated from accusations by nine women and during the trial at least 45 people were called in to testify against the singer.
Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean argued in her motion that the appropriate sentencing range was 14 to 17.5 years.
However, prosecutors pushed for a harsher sentence, insisting it was prudent due to the seriousness of the charges against her client.
“The government respectfully submits that a sentence in excess of 25 years is warranted,” the prosecution stated.
Kelly is accused of trying to bribe a government official to help him marry Aaliyah when she was aged 15.
NPR reports that the testimonies about two other acts by a victim named Sonja were not proved.
Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York were able to convince the jury composed of seven men and five women that Kelly had run a criminal enterprise that lured minors into his arms for intimacy.
